Song of the Sparrow is a novel written in poetry form telling the story of Elaine of Ascolat. In this King Arthur story, Elaine lives in the camp with the soldiers because her mother was killed. She is left with her brothers and her father. As the only girl in the camp, she handles the healing and the sewing. Morgan Le Fay, Arthur's sister appears from time to time and is the only female companion to Elaine until Arthur's wife to be, Gwynivere appears.A lovely novel with beautiful lines and verses. Elaine is a character that one can like and understand. I did like how Sandell did not follow Tennyson's Elaine where she died of heartbreak. Instead, the Elaine here is a brave girl who is still growing and trying to find her way while surround by men. If you like King Arthur stories, this one is not to miss.
